Black Screen and no Apple light when I switch on my MacBook pro?

Put down my MacBook Last night after the power ran out, came back to it this morning, plugged in the charger and switched it on. For a while there was nothing, although the keyboard was lit. I closed the MacBook confused and when I did I heard the 'on' chime.

Opened it back up, still nothing. The screen is black, the Apple logo is not lit.

I've tried restarting it, tried tapping in the password and hitting enter as was suggested on a similar question, to no avail.

I am NOT a tech whizz, I have no clue of terminology or what to do. I don't want to spend a fortune on repairs that aren't needed because I spent the only small fortune I had in this laptop! So... any suggestions? Or is this one for the Apple Store? And if so I bought it in December 2016 so less than a year ago, will this fall within the warranty? Thanks everyone!

Of course this will fall under warranty (unless you spilled a glass of wine or something over your MacBook).

But first try a reset of the System Management Controller:

  1. Shut down your Mac. [not applicable]
  2. Unplug the MagSafe or USB-C power adapter from your computer.
  3. Using the built-in keyboard, press Shift-Control-Option on the left side of the keyboard, then press the power button at the same time. Hold these keys and the power button for 10 seconds.
If you have a 2016 MacBook Pro with Touch ID, the Touch ID button is also the power button.
  4. Release all keys.
  5. Reconnect the power adapter.
  6. Press the power button again to turn on your Mac.
