Endnote plugin v3 for Pages does not work properly when you want to use APA 6th. Anybody same problem?

With the new EndNote plugin for Pages, v3, the APA 6th style for citations in the text is not applied properly. Author name appears with first name or initials when APA doesn't want that (unless it is necessary to prevent mixing up different authors with the same last name); moreover, the plugin doesn't show page numbers anymore (v2 did it very well). wonder if I can reinstall v2.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), EndNote X7.3.1, PAges 5.5.3

Dear blainek17,

I'm a professional academic user of Pages and EndNote...

It's sad to say but after years and years of complaints, Apple still doesn't release an acceptable EndNote plugin...

The version you say (3.1) it's a little better than others, but there are still some major issues:

1. Pages doesn't recognize title in italic: it writes only regular

2. You cannot even manually change the formatting of the characters: they are fixed inside the EndNote coded citation or bibliography

3. You cannot even unlink your document from EndNote, to clean the code!

It's incredible but I must conclude that EndNote is still NOT usable with Pages, at least for professionals (but I can hardly imagine another use)...

Can you see any resolution?

Dear VikingOSX (Level 7),

because:

1) Apple presents it as a reliable app for all users (professionals and consumers-and I'm editing plain texts, not images)

2) Apple itself presents it as fully compatible with EndNote, that is NOT true. Only professionals use EndNote.

3) MS Word, which I know well, it's no more professional than Pages and has problems too, and I prefer Pages; but the difference is that the plugin for MS can be developed by Clarivate, the plugin for Pages cannot.

But I think this shouldn't be an apology, on the contrary...

I had that problem too. Took me some time to work around the issue.

Here's a temporary fix:

1. Make a backup of your document just in case.

2. Sync Endnote so your references don't get lost.

3. Delete Endnote and Pages completely using something like CleanMyMac (don't know if neccessary - just what I did).

4. Reinstall Endnote and sync if necessary (my references were still intact after the reinstall).

5. Install Pages 6.1.1 (Look for it on the internet 😉, I don't want to link to it).

6. Install Pages EndNote-Plug-in 2.0

7. Opening the document after that worked for me.

8. Don't update Pages!

(Info: I'm on EndNote X7.7, Bld 11722)

Hi Renerius,

I understand that you’re having issues with the formatting of your citations using the EndNote plug-in for Pages. I’d like to provide you with a resource that I believe will be helpful in resolving your issue.

An update was recently released for the EndNote plug-in. Please use this link to download and install the latest version of the EndNote plug-in:

Download Pages EndNote Plug-in v3.1

Take care.

I have the same problem when pages was upgraded. It does not reformat the in-text citation format. I tried to reinstall v2 of the plugin but it didn't work. I talked to endnote and they suggested reinstalling Pages. So I threw away the Pages and reinstalled but it did not fix the problem. Endnote is fully aware of the problem but they are handcuffed because it is apple who writes the plugin. I find it incomprehensible that this wasn't somehow tested and caught by those working on the plugin at Apple.

Apple it would also be great if you would release the API to other reference managers like Zotero, Mendeley and Papers. In addition the plugins have never been very efficient. You have to insert one reference at a time. So if you have six references for a particular statement you must repeat the insert citation 6-times. Almost every other modern interface allows one to search using multiple search terms simultaneously and also allow for insertion of multiple references at once.

Hope this helped and sorry for the rant at the end. But I feel like they are not listening.

Hi Peter,

Sorry I guess I didn't make it clear that I spoke with EndNote support today. Apple is the one that writes and provided EndNote with the plug-in. EndNote can't really do anything because they do not have access to the API. That is why the plug-in is a download from Apple, not from EndNote. The support engineer I spoke with said they are aware of the issue and await Apple's release of a functional version of the plug-in.

Hope this helps clarify things.

It has always been an issue between Apple and EndNote.

I have seen little sign that Apple listens to or considers its users but providing detailed feedback via Menu > Pages > Provide Pages Feedback is your only option.

EndNote probably has more clout, but reading their Support pages they are similarly frustrated.

If you use Pages '09 there are several alternate citation options all of which ultimately work with less issues than this.

major problem with the new EndNote plugin. The in-text references are not formatted according to the selected output style; rather, they list all authors. This is a disaster for those of us writing grant proposals, as the increased length of these references changes the entire layout of the document - figures, overall length, etc.

How released this without confirming functionality is inexcusable. And to compound the error, there does not seem to be any way to go back to the earlier version of Pages and Endnote plugin that were functional.

Agree that Apple's failure to fully vet the updated plugin before distribution is unacceptable. Compounding this is the lack of ability to go back to 2.0, which was working fine with EndNote 8.0.1. It would be helpful if they would at least acknowledge the problem and provide a tentative timeline for resolution. Otherwise, I may start using Word again (after more than half a decade w/o it).

I have the same problem. A research paper I've been working on for two years can no longer be edited in Pages because if I cut and paste anything, all my citations switch from numbered to author-date. And I used Pages to do the final layout as well, so moving to Word is really challenging. But from now until this is resolved I have no choice to but to quit writing in Pages. I've submitted feedback via the web and Feedback Assistant and received no response. I first noticed this issue a couple of months ago while using EndNote X7 so I updated to X8 and Apple's 3.0 plugin and still no luck. This is a huge issue for anyone doing serious writing. I also contacted EndNote/Clarivate and they said it's up to Apple to fix the issue. Hey Apple, FIX THIS!

Jul 16, 2017 2:54 PM in response to Renerius

So I found that if you find a friend with the prior version of Pages, either the app itself or the installer, you can copy that version from their hard drive onto your own, reinstall the prior Endnote plugin that worked into the prior version of Pages - and your good to go. In other words, you can have two versions of Pages on your computer - just start up the older version and open your documents from it, rather than just double-clicking on the document itself. This doesn't excuse Apple releasing a plugin that is useless, but at least you can get back to the state you were in before updating Pages.

Jul 30, 2017 8:34 AM in response to blainek17

Not only does this not work, but it eliminated the bibliography! I was able to undo, but I'm stunned that y'all provided a "fix" that worsens the problem! As serious writers, researchers, teachers and students we cannot use Pages until this is fixed. The potential scale of this problem would seem to warrant a more concerted and urgent effort on Apple's part!
