All my text randomly deleted?!?

I was texting someone tonight, my phone dinged when I got a new text, but when i opened it the only thing in the thread was a single old text from June 7th. I backed out of the messages app then cut my phone off, but when I turned it back in all my text were gone. And to make matters worse text are still taking up 1.5 GB of memory even though there are no text on my phone. How can I fix this? Is there anyway to get all my text back?

The only way to get old texts back is to restore a backup that was made while the texts were present. Doing so would restore the entire iPhone to the state it was in when the backup was made.

Texts disappearing is a sign of a serious iPhone storage shortage. Check Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage > Manage Storage (under Storage) and be certain you never have any less (hopefully much more) than 10% of your iPhone's total storage free. Spending 1½GB of precious storage space on messages sounds ominous at best.

Once you've done storage cleaning, reset the iPhone. Hold the on/off and home buttons together for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
