Weird fonts on some emails to iPhone

I have received several emails on my new phone that are written in a weird font that is unreadable. I have been into mail preferences on my Mac and set my preferred font to Arial, however this does not seem to have made a difference. What is the cause and how can I fix it. Do I need to take the phone to an Apple shop?
