Late-2013 Macbook Pro Retina - Slowed down

Hi,

My MacBook has always been very fast and performed very well. However, a couple weeks ago it suddenly slowed down. There was nothing that I did in the days before that I believe caused this. Every application I open causes the pinwheel and takes far too long to open. Web pages don't load normally either and often result in me having to kill the pages. It will fluctuate between being painfully slow and unusable.

Below is an EtreCheck. If anyone has an idea as to how to fix this or what caused it, please let me know!

Thanks!

Hi,

Try resetting the SMC: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295.

Do you use Parallels and Citrix? If so, make sure both are up to date; if not, get rid of them.

Open Utilities > Disk Utility > select your HD on the left (the first item on the list) > make sure S.M.A.R.T. status says “Verified” (if it doesn’t it means there is a hardware issue with the HD, or an impending one) > click on the second item on the list (which should be Macintosh HD or the name you named your internal HD) > click on “First Aid” > (depending on your OS, you may have to click on Repair Disk or Verify Disk) > click on “Run” > allow it to finish running > click on “Show Details” > look at the last few lines and see if it says something like "Appears to be OK" and/or “Operation successful;” if so, click on “Done,” go to the Disk Utility menu and select “Quit Disk Utility.”

If it says “Cannot be repaired” or something like it anytime during the run, run it a few more times to see if Disk Utility can repair it. If not, click on “Done,” go to the Disk Utility menu, select “Quit Disk Utility.”

Thanks for the reply!

I tried your recomendations and the problems unfortunately persisted. The disk utility test came back saying there is corruption that needs to be replaced. I went out and bought a new SSD and replaced it then restored it with a time machine backup. The problems did not go away and are the same as they were before. I tried restarting it with the new startup disk and still not difference.

Is it possible that it is an application or file issue that was carried over via the time machine backup and not a hardware issue? Is it worth my time to try put back the old SSD and restore it with only the necessary backed-up items?

Any other ideas?

Thanks again!

Yes, it appears that's exactly what happened. I would erase the SSD, install the OS, and not restore any data. See how your Mac runs then. If it's OK, then you know something is wrong with some type of data on TM. Restore your apps one at a time and test your Mac out each time, then you'll know if an app is causing the issue. If not, then you can restore your data.

Hi!

I put back the old SSD (which I previously erased before removing) because I assume that because the problems persisted even after replacing it, it was not the cause. I then reinstalled OSX and didn't restore anything from my backups. The slowness and lagginess was still there.

It appears that we can rule out the cause being the SSD or any file or application that I had on the backup. Do you have any idea what else could be causing this?

Because of the problems diagnosing this, I guess I'll provide some more detailed information as to what is actually going on...

When starting the computer, the loading freezes at the same spot on the loading bar every time, the entire screen then shrinks to the top left corner for a couple seconds and then bounces back and continues loading.

Once loaded, the status bar will not appear and I will often get the beachball before even opening anything.

When I open an application, the app will bounce with some lag, the status bar will finally appear and the application will take far far longer than normal to load and will often give me a beachball while loading.

Even once an app is fully loaded, any actions within the app such as loading a new web page in safari, takes a very long time.

I'll often get not-responding and have trouble quitting applications and will have to resort to force quitting them via the task manager.

Any animations such as swiping with four fingers to show all open windows (don't know the name for that) is extremely slow and laggy.

And it is important to mention that the slowness I'm describing isn't just a consistently slowed down machine where you can click on something, know you must then wait a couple seconds, and continue what you're doing. It is very inconsistent and difficult to use and predict.

Please let me know if you have any ideas. Thank you!!

Did you set the startup disk?

Now that we've tried all that, it looks like a hardware issue. A HD cable was a thought earlier, but your MBP doesn't have a HD cable, the drive plugs into the logic board, and the RAM is indeed soldered to it, so if it is a hardware issue, and given you've already replaced the HD, that means it's almost certainly the logic board.

I just experienced this EXACT SAME PROBLEM YESTERDAY, SEPT 24, 2017. My MacbookPro Retina was early 2013. It has always been extemely fast! Yesterday morning it was fine, then all of a sudden, yesterday afternoon about 2p, I was getting the beach ball constantly, and it was like pulling teeth to get my MBPR to do anything. First I thought it was Cox and so I reset everything several times, as the internet also was running at 20 mbs when normally I get 250mbs download. So, after calling COX and yelling at them since every Sunday the speed slows down due high traffic I guess (LOL), I went into my husbands office and his speed was normal. So I called my Mac GURU, and we did what you did Etrecheck. The first time it said POOR and then she got rid of or fixed all the files that came up red in the test. the next time we ran it, it came up good. We also ran Malwarbytes but no malware was present. We booted in safe mode, but it was still slow. So now we are thinking hardware problem. I purchased this mBPR in June of 2013 and it pretty much stays in 1 place. I have taken it out 2 times only . As with all laptops, the first thing I thought of was OVERHEATING. I recently changed from having it on a granite desk to a Tempered Glass top. The bottom was hot, but I think it always is. Anyway, I put 2 small boxes under it, about 4 inches tall, so there is a lot of airflow under it . I also shut it down for a while, as just rebooting it didnt help. (first thing I did was reboot) By 9pm, it was totally back to normal...no beachball, no slowness.. internet speed back up to 250MBS. I am going to call and find out if OVERHEATING is an issue? I turn off the display at night, but the computer still runs. Seems like for what I paid, since I put 16 mb Ram & 750 MB SSD..I had purchased the top of the line at the time and spent way too much. Seems to me it should last morw than 4 years without having to be fixed. It may not even have been overheating...who knows. But it is fine again today. I am going to make sure my Clone is perfect, than I may take it in to see if there is some hardware glitch .
