Why does my email disappear after reading

Question

After I read an email, after a period of time, approx 15 days, the email disappears. Where does it go? And why doesn't it stay in my email box?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

They seem to disappear just as I am reading them.

They disappear as my finger hovers over them without touching the key.
