photo and video split screen

Hi, I'm using iMovie to make home made drum lessons. I was wondering if it's possible to have a photo and a video on a split screen so I can have a photo of the drum notation and a video clip on the screen at the same time...

The split screen effect assigns half of the screen to each clip/photo. Because the video clip is 16x9 it gets cut off. The best you can do to see as much of the clip is to select the crop button and choose crop to fit. Then drag out the corner caret as far as possible going outside the window. Keep resetting the center to the center of the window and keep dragging until it won't go any further. Do this for the clip and the photo and you can get almost all of clip/photo to be seen. It's fiddly but works.

Sure you can. Put the clip on the timeline and the photo above it. Make sure the photo begins where the clip begins and drag it out to the same length. Select the photo and in the tool bar above the viewer select the square icon on the left and choose split screen from the drop down menu. You can also choose which appears on the left or right of the split screen.
