Why can't I re-install OS El Capitan from the App Store?
I'm getting rid of an 2009 MacBook but can't download OS El Capitan from the App Store as a fresh re-install
MacBook, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

Have you followed the steps in this Apple Support Topic?
What to do before you sell or give away your Mac - Apple Support
You should re-install the original system your Mac shipped with.
If you still need El Capitan try this link:
You can't. Anything coming from the Mac App Store would be tied to your Apple ID, and as such would require it for anything later.
So unless you plan on giving the new user your Apple ID and Password to use with the installation of El Capitan, you should not do that.
Simply Install whatever OSx version came with the computer, and let the new owner update with their own Apple ID.
That computer should have come with OSx 10.5 Leopard in Disc format. You should include those discs with the computer as they are part of it.
I've followed the guidance to the letter but from Install OS X Utility every time I sign in I get a message
"This item is temporarily unavailable"
And from the link I gave you?
Link works from my iMac, but not sure how I can access it from freshly erased MacBook?
Thanks that's not clear from current docs.
Yes, Phil is correct. Is it that you cannot install the original OS via Recovery?
I will try that later, actually have copy of OSX Snow Leopard I could use as well.
Thanks
