Bad Bootcamp Install & Phantom Disk Space

I have a late 2015 iMac running Sierra version 10.12.5 (16F73). I tried to install Bootcamp but there was an installation error. When I tried to install again, I was unable to because of a different disk error that I should run Disk Utility to fix it. Did that... but it didn't fix the problem.

This person had the exact same problem I had:

Here's the output of my "diskutil list":

I noticed the 413GB of free space, so I used the following command (based on the earlier post with the same issue):

diskutil cs resizeVolume 698B348A-60BF-4985-8B07-247F021BC6D7 0g

But got this error:

The Core Storage Logical Volume UUID is 698B348A-60BF-4985-8B07-247F021BC6D7

Started CoreStorage operation

Error: -69674: The provided Core Storage logical volume has an incorrect size; you should run whole-disk repair

Can anyone tell me if I'm in the right ballpark?

I appreciate any help I can get... trying to avoid trip to the Apple Store. Thx...

After resizeVolume, you will need to run from Terminal

diskutil repairDisk disk0

this should correct the error. Reboot and check for Free Space. The 3TB Fusion drive requires a specific partition layout.

Your CS volume is incorrect. The 121Gb SSD should be first in the CS volume at index 0. The 3TB HDD should be at index 1. Do you have a Time Machine backup?

Jul 2, 2017 11:37 AM in response to benzz88

The index 0 disk is considered the faster disk (SSD) from which blocks are de-staged to the slower disk (HDD). Reversing the order leads to performance issues. The other challenge is the behavior of BC Assistant. It uses the disk at index 1 (or higher) create a BC partition. Due to the underlying size, you may see partitioning errors similar to what you may have already seen.

It may be prudent to fix the CS LV/LVG before you install Windows. Correcting it later has additional challenges of having to move the Windows partition.

Jul 8, 2017 12:18 PM in response to Loner T

I followed the example in the post and thought I'd resolved my problems -- the SSD seemed to have been indexed at 0 and the HDD indexed at 1. That's what I was looking to do. Then I brought back my content through Migration Assistant from a Time Machine Backup.

Here's the new output of "diskutil cs list":

And here's the new "diskutil list"... here it shows the HDD back at 0 and the SSD back at 1:

And when I go to run Bootcamp Assistant, I get this error:

The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.

The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows.

Can you tell where I went wrong?

Jul 8, 2017 12:39 PM in response to benzz88

Can you post the output of

diskutil cs list

macOS can renumber disks after reboot, however, the Fusion drive sequence should stay as the SSD first and HDD second, because macOS does not re-build Fusion drive once it has been setup.

There is a manual partitioning method for a 3Tb Fusion drive using cs resizeStack which can help us partition it correctly.

Here's where the HDD is 0 and the SSD is 1. Also, this output doesn't look like it's correct. Do I need to swap those index numbers before giving Bootcamp another try?

Jul 8, 2017 5:15 PM in response to Loner T

Gotcha. That's cool then.

When I run Boot Camp Assistant, I get the same message as before:

The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.

The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows.

I also still get dual "Boba Fett 2" and "Boba Fett" drives when I boot into option mode. Is there still a partition in the machine that is throwing off Boot Camp?

Jul 8, 2017 5:32 PM in response to benzz88

I think I found the problem. In Apple's Support docs for Boot Camp they say:

Microsoft Reserved and Windows Recovery partitions can be identified as unmounted partitions with the name "disk0s3" or "disk0s5" in Disk Utility. To remove these partitions, use OS X Disk Utility.

One of those names is used for Apple Recovery in my HDD:

/dev/disk0 (internal, physical):

#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER

0: GUID_partition_scheme *3.0 TB disk0

1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1

2: Apple_CoreStorage OSX-Macintosh-LVG 3.0 TB disk0s2

3: Apple_Boot Boot OS X 134.2 MB disk0s3

4: Apple_Boot 650.0 MB disk0s4

Which doesn't even seem like the right name. Isn't it supposed to be called "Mac OS X Recovery" or something like it? I don't think the recovery files are even in there, because when I booted into recovery, I went straight to the spinning globe... it wasn't a local recovery partition that was used.

I have the same partition on the SSD as well:

/dev/disk1 (internal, physical):

#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER

0: GUID_partition_scheme *121.3 GB disk1

1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk1s1

2: Apple_CoreStorage OSX-Macintosh-LVG 121.0 GB disk1s2

3: Apple_Boot Boot OS X 134.2 MB disk1s3

Do I need to delete the partition for "disk0s3" in order to install Boot Camp? And if I do that, will that do anything to my OS? Doesn't seem like I use those recovery tools anyway.
