Try unchecking the box again to see if it will continue as it did the last time.
as a last ditch attempt
try checking (depends on device your synching what to check) WHAT is in iCloud
application data? personal data?
if you have any 3rd party apps try disabling iCloud use. perhaps you have a 3rd party app using iCloud that has done something un-expected with it's synch file.
or for personal files try moving these out of iCloud into a regular folder
now there is less to synch, and only "normal things" for iCloud to synch
Try going to System Preferences/iCloud and stop syncing by unchecking the box. Wait a couple of minutes, then recheck syncing.
Hmmm...... 53GB data. If I 'Keep a copy' what happens when i turn it back on?
Actually, Clicking the checkbox and getting to the "iCloud Drive needs to finish updating...." dialogue box seems to have given it a kick....
"Uploading 81 items..." and counting.....
Cancel the upload, restart your Mac, try again.
If you keep a copy, it should sync again when you turn it back on.
