Airport Express SNMP

Airport Time Capsule 802.11ac, v7.7.8

Airport Express 802.11n (2nd Generation), v.7.6.8

Airport Utility 6.3.7

I can use a utility called iNET Network Scanner (Version 2.4.2 (1093)) to connect to my Airport Express and get detailed SNMP data. The problem is I cannot change the community password on the device to protect this data.

There are no SNMP settings available in the menus. Is there another way to setup SNMP?

Possibly, but it would require that you use an older Mac running the Leopard (10.5.x) or Snow Leopard (10.6.x) operating system, or a PC with AirPort Utility for Windows 5.6.1 installed on the device might work as well.

There are also methods that will attempt to install the older 5.6.1 utility on newer Mac operating systems, but this not officially supported by Apple, and it may or may not work. We cannot discuss those methods here, but even if it works, you will be required to lower some of the default security settings on your Mac.....which would not be recommended.

As you already note, AirPort Utility versions 6.3 and higher do not support SNMP at all.....even if the AirPort device might.

But, even if this works, it will only work for the AirPort Express, since the 802.11ac Apple AirPorts do not have firmware support for SNMP.

The problem is I cannot change the community password on the device to protect this data.

Not sure how that might affect things in your particular setup.

Unfortunately, the Second Generation version of the AirPort Express is the "newer" model. Apple has not made any changes to this device in 5 years.

The current version AirPort Extreme 802.11ac model does not support SNMP, so you might consider that product if you want to stay with an Apple router. The 802.11ac version was introduced in June 2013, and Apple has not made any hardware changes to the device since it was introduced.....so it is not exactly "new", if that is your goal.

Same for the AirPort Time Capsule 802.11ac, which is an AirPort Extreme with a built in hard drive.

You can form your own conclusions, but to most users it does appear that Apple is not very interested in trying to be competitive in the wireless router business.

I just purchased the Airport Express Base Station a few days ago at Target. It looks like it is 2nd Generation, mid-2012.

It sounds like I need to return this one for a newer model, so this SNMP data cannot be leached by someone in range of my device.

Is there a part number of the box I can look for so I do not buy a five year old base station again?
