Airport Unknown user, incorrect password,or login disable ... (58)

Hi, I have a time capsule where I'm not connecting to directly, this is my topology:

Internet --- Optimum modem --- Optimum router --- (Wireless) --- Time Capsule (3rd generation)

|

|--- (Wireless) Laptop Windows 7

Time Capsule version: 7.6.8

I'm not expanding my Wireless, I configure the TC to join the wireless, everytime that I want to access my disk I'm receiving the next error:

Unknown user, incorrect password, or login disabled. Please retype the login information or contact the disk's administrator (58). Attached you'll find a screen shot from the error.

I already tried everything, enable guest access, enable by disk password, enable by device password, all of them I receive the same error... Please help me, I just want to add the disk into the Wireless so I can make backups.

The current configuration that I have:

Internet -- Optimum Modem -- Optimum router ))) Wireless

|

\ --- Cable --- Time Capsule

I turned off the Wireless, from the computer I'm able to ping the TC with no problem, the optimum router sends an IP to the TC using the DHCP server, unfortunately, I can't see the disk, I'm receiving the error. I'm cc'ing a couple of screenshots to validate. I'm not able to use the application AirPort Base (same error) and when I try to search for the IP with \\192.168.1.150 (ip address of the TC) I don't have access, there is no prompt or something like that, I'm able to ping the device with no problem.

Check if SMB 1.0 support is enabled in Windows:

Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> Turn Windows features on or off

Look for the above option at Control Panel's left side. A list opens, scroll down until you reach "SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support". It solved the issue for me.

Background:

Due to security concerns about ransomware like WannaCrypt I disabled the culprit SMB1 file sharing protocol from my Windows 10 machine, fearing an attack would reach through the local network my valuable Time Capsule 4th gen hard drive, used for online photo and video backup.

I had disabled SMB 1.0, since only cheap hardware should require outdated SMB 1.0 support because of lazy devs/vendors that didn't care to upgrade to more modern version of the protocol. Windows still ships with it just for compatibility reasons with older hardware.

SMB 1.0 is a very dangerous thing. I enable it only in Windows only when I need to access the TC. I need to figure out a safer way to communicate with TC.

Apple removed the "join" option for the 802.11n and 802.11ac AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule base stations with version 6.x of the AirPort Utility. Although you can still select this option with version 5.x of this utility for Windows it really is deprecated.

In this mode, sharing the TC's internal hard drive is iffy, at best, as you can attest by the errors that you are getting attempting to do so.

Windows can be a bit difficult with TC..

1. Plug the computer directly into a LAN port of the TC and try again.

2. If you are using latest windows 10.. and SMB2 or SMB3 with the older TC you might be having a real network incompatibility.

Try turning on guest disk access, on the disk tab.

3. Domain issues.. The TC is sometimes difficult to reach because the hard disk access might need to have the domain correct.. The TC seems to be locked to using local as domain. If your Optimum router allows set the domain name to local.. and try pinging the TC by name including the domain and not just IP.

4. Setup the TC as a secondary DHCP server. But your computer must be plugged directly to the TC for this to work.. it is nifty as you are routing through the TC without double NAT. You can also use its wireless.. that might also be a solution if you are running a laptop. I have described this setup several times.. but probably never from windows.. so ask again if you want to try and I will have a go.

In the end .. buy a cheap one disk standard PC network storage (WD or Seagate make network drives that cost a fraction over the price of a bare disk).. or go up to a proper NAS.. running a 6+ year old TC for windows is like getting elephants to dance.. it may be possible.. but the results are far from pretty. And your toes will be flat..
