Kernel panics right and left!

SIX in the last five hours!

New RAM checks out in Rember; haven't done other tests. Hardware Check stalls out upon detecting non-OEM battery, although the battery checks out fine in CoconutBattery.

Partial reports follow. In the meantime, I'll replace the RAM with the original factory modules and see if the issue stops.

Will the computer start in the Safe Mode?

Safe Mode - About El Capitan also Sierra

Safe Mode Startup – El Capitan. also Sierra

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

I've re-installed the original RAM and will paying the vendor of the new modules a visit when they open at 10 AM EST.

It looks as though the HD may be winding down, but maybe I'm just being pessimistic. I'm hoping it's just the new RAM that's at fault, in spite of OWC's sterling reputation. I'm backed up as of yesterday, but I've got Time Machine running now.

The panics all occurred when no externals were connected, so the TM USB drive should not be placing the machine in further peril.

Jul 8, 2017 6:24 AM in response to Andrew Likes to Draw

It would be odd for the hard drive to cause a panic. A failing hard drive would be indicated by spinning beachballs when trying to access the disk. You might only see that when accessing certain portions of the drive, so it may be subtle at first.

If the SMART status in Disk Utility says there is a problem, then the drive needs to be replaced. "Verified," however, does not indicate that the drive is good to go. SMART just isn't seeing any obvious pattern, yet.

On my way to Mikey's, but I do have to report that with the OWC modules re-installed, the computer no longer crashes on startup, and I'm posting from it now.

I'll include the crash log here just in case the computer doesn't work when I get there. This way the techs will have access to it.

Strange developments. The computer ran for 24 hours without the battery, then crashed instantly when I reconnected it.

I thought I might get a replacement under warranty; according to my receipt, it was installed on Dec 23. It came with a one-year warranty, but only if it failed to hold at least an 80% charge. It was holding a charge just fine, but I didn't want to pay for a new one under the circumstances.

I contacted NewTech, and they said it couldn't possibly be "conditioned" after only 2 cycles, and that I should reset PRAM and SMC, run the computer for at least two hours with the battery in, then let it drain. I decided to try it, suspecting it would do no good.

I haven't unplugged the computer yet. It's been running with no problems since resetting the PRAM and SMC!

The only other change was altering Spotlight's settings to restrict it to local drives. Activity Monitor showed it using lots of memory and CPU .

Hard to believe that a few seconds' work could solve the issue, but that appears to be the case.

Jul 9, 2017 11:34 PM in response to Andrew Likes to Draw

did you test your mac using safe mode. If the problem didn't occur on safe mode, it is not hardware, and most likely a third party issue (software installed, drivers etc)

I have two MacBook pro, that were going through kernel panic, one was solved with SMC an PRAM reset.

The other one, well, bare with me:

there are three possible scenarios for logs you have presented, if its hardware.

1- the battery - (the least likely to cause panic and the least likely to cause headache to fix)

2- The RAM - (cumbersome to fix, but manageable.) From my experience, RAM rarely become faulty, unlike battery or HDD. I never had a faulty RAM in my life. (hopefully I won't jinx it lol)

3 - HDD cable - yep you read that correctly.

Mine was the third one, the HDD cable. install smartctl and run it from terminal smartctl -a diskN and keep monitoring UDMA_CRC_Error_Count , if it is going up (it should be 0 at all times), then you will know it is the HDD cable. Or you can open the MacBook pro, unplug the cable and check it with multimeter, it must have 1:1 ratio, continuous (no resistance).

weed out software issues first, kernel panics usually tend to be software related.

Jul 13, 2017 7:18 AM in response to Andrew Likes to Draw

in most cases, it is a software issue and hopefully that is your case. If the reinstall did the trick, that is wonderful.

additional advice, install smartctl and monitor UDMA_CRC_Error_Count as stated above. your MacBook pro 2011 model is notorious for HDD cable becoming faulty, along with non retina 2012 models. In such a case, when a system is unable to read a continuous flow of data from HDD during a process, it panics (kernel panic), freeze and shuts off and sometimes just freeze and hang, requiring manual power down.

I hope your case is fixed by now!

cheers
