Duplicates not being deleted in Contacts

After connecting with iCloud, I ended up with a ton of duplicate contacts. The duplicates only appear on my iMac, not on icloud.com. So I followed these instructions:

  1. Make a copy of your contacts.
  2. Open Contacts.
  3. From the Card menu, select Card > Look for Duplicates.
  4. When asked, click Merge.
  5. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until no duplicates are found.

It merged one duplicate (there are dozens to be identified as duplicates) and the rest are still there. Any clue?

The method you wrote in your question will work , if you merge duplicate contacts . Suppose there are thousands of duplicates , one can not merge them manually selecting each of them as its a time taking job .

If you are using gmail account a method is there to merge duplicates .

Open webmail by entering gmail address and password , take the cursor on top left and click on drop down arrows of gmail , click on contacts .

User uploaded file

A window appears , click on duplicates , if there are many duplicate contacts an option will be there to merge all .
