My IMessage screen is locked
iPad (3rd gen) Wi-Fi, iOS 9.3.5
Force close the Messages app first. Double tap the home button and then swipe up and off the top of the screen on the Messages preview window to close the app. The restart your iPad and try again.
If that doesn't work, force close the app again but force restart your iPad this time. To force restart your device, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least ten seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
I assume then that you have tried to enter information into the Apple ID space and the password field and that produced no response from the iPad either?
Did you close all apps and force restart?
