Software Update Launcher Hangs on Shutdown

Macbook Pro 15" 2016

2.6 Ghz i7

On shut down or restart, Software Update Launcher Starts, and hangs with a solid black screen. No menu links work. Unable to force quit or shut down from menu. Only way to shut down is to hold down the power button.

Frustrating. This thing is brand new. Have searched and found nothing that addresses this. Doesn't seem like a partial download. Updates are all up to date. I've unchecked the automatic updates.

Any help, greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Good afternoon Cliffhumit,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

To stop Software Update Launcher, start your computer in safe mode.

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

Then open System Preferences, select Users & Groups, sign in with your Apple ID, and click on the Login Items tab. Select the application that is launching at startup, and click the minus (-) below the list to remove it.

macOS Sierra: Open items automatically when you log in

Finally, click on the Apple menu and choose restart to start your computer normally (without holding down the Shift key).

If this does not resolve your issue, please let us know and we'll investigate further with you.

Take care.

Thank you for responding!!

Note: the issue is on shutdown, not startup

Started in safe mode. Checked out users and groups and the login items. Then restarted.

Note: The macbook successfully restarted without the hang of "softwareupdatelauncher" from safe mode.

The issues remains. When restarting, or shutdown, "softwareupdatelauncher" starts and hangs on black screen.

Thanks so much for the help.
