Problems with editing iPhone 6s HD footage

Hi,

I have been editing on my mid 2009 mac book pro for many years, using Final Cut Express 4 with no problems.

I have recently got an iphone 6s and the main reason was for the camera. However, I find once I have converted the footage to Apple Intermediate Codex it becomes very jerky when loaded into Final Cut Express, (even after rendering). I am using MPEG Streamclip to convert. I have tried using different settings to my normal, with some limited success. (NB I am not shooting in 4K, just HD).

Can anyone suggest the best settings to use for conversion or perhaps an alternative program to use to convert?

Thanks in advance, this is really getting frustrating!

So that's the info on the clip after it was transcoded in Streamclip…right?

Is 30P what the iPhone settings were when the footage was shot, or did you change the frame rate?

And I thought you converted to AIC, not ProRes.

edit: Just to add, it's usually best to edit in the same frame rate at which the clip was shot. MPEG Streamclip is a very good compression app, although I believe it's been a while since it was updated. It should be able to provide you with satisfactory output.

Hi Russ,

Firstly, thanks very much for your help. Sorry for my later than expected reply, but work and family have intervened!

Yes, thats the clip transcoded in Streamclip- however, it Quicktime automatically converted it to play on Quicktime. I checked the original file using "get info" and it is AIC.

I haven't changed the iphone settings, so its factory pre-set, which I am assuming is 30FPS.

I have transcoded some footage to 30 FPS, (using my otherwise normal settings), and it appears to have removed the jerky motion! The play back in Final Cut can, at times, be a little corrupted, (for want of a better technical term, it appears to slightly shimmer in places). However, I rendered a small clip into a Linear PCM, H.264 .mov file, (which I upload to youtube with), and it appeared ok! So am hoping I made a rookie mistake with FPS conversion and all will be well, (although I haven't had chance yet to do any serious editing and check more footage). I will put a sequence together and render it and see if it really is just a Final Cut playback issue.

Any other transcoding advice or settings or forum recommendations would be gratefully received.

Thanks again for your help, its most appreciated.

Andy
