best program replacement in high sierra?

Hi, I’m still running yosemite on my macbook pro and thus am able to use aperture, but I’m planning on buying a new laptop and will be forced to give it up with the move to high sierra.

Im so used to the main functions I use in aperture such as ‘lift metadata & adjustments’ (i use this for batch cropping mostly) and want to know which program will now be the easiest for a non professional like me to use?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Although Aperture seems to run on OS 10.13.2 on an iMac PRO, I finally migrated my library to Photos. Surprisingly much of the Aperture organizational structure transferred to Photos. I can import Sony A7Rii RAW/JPEG photos into Photos and I am able to edit in either RAW or JPEG in Photos by right clicking in Edit and selecting "Use RAW as original" or "Use JPEG as original." The auto light balance in Photos is excellent. Although there is no zoom icon, I can zoom in using two fingers on a track pad by enabling zoom in, zoom out in the track pad control panel. I still can export selected photos in RAW and then process the selected images in DXO Optics Pro. The 8K Sony images are stunning in 5K. There is still some lag when editing in RAW in Photos. My biggest gripe is that Photos does not seem to support dual/split view, a large image displayed over a choice of thumbnails.

Hi Leonie,

After recurring bugs while browsing my Aperture pics in raw, I will probably try Capture One which has a lot of good reviews.

I was wondering, maybe you could help me on a different matter.

In 2014, we had some exchanges on this forum and as a consequence, I did some stats on my Aperture library, extracting (date, keywords, ratings, focal length, shutter speed, aperture and iso) from exif data, then processing them in Excel.

This was quite interesting as it revealed my habits, my need for a wider angle, and some bad reflexes on low lights.

Now I'm trying to do it again and I can't put my hands on the program I used. I remember I started from a recommendation of yours, in my memory an applescript, but can't find any on my computer. Maybe it was directly exiftool, though I'm not aware of a possibility to use it on Aperture library. Or an Aperture metadata file ? Any inputs appreciated. Thanks

Thanks a lot.

Actually you had already provided me with an AppleScript inside an Automator workflow.

Your link gave me the idea to do a search on your name on my computer and found it again !

What a strange world we live in where it's easier to find some info under our nose by asking someone at the other end of the world !

Thanks !

We cannot yet say for sure, which of the alternatives to Aperture will run on High Sierra. High Sierra is still an early Beta version, and nobody is allowed to post test results. Some apps may need updating for High Sierra.

Your best bet would be to rely on the current results for Sierra. Aperture 3.6 is still working on Sierra, not worse than on Yosemite.

I'm running Aperture without problems using Sierra on 2010 Mac Pro. I replaced my older Mac Pro with a used 2010 model, put in lots of memory, SSDs, and a high power graphics card. This gives me 3-4 years of supported OS X on a reasonably priced machine. I also allowed me to use the keyboard, mouse and monitor I already had.

Have you considered trying ON1 RAW 2018? It runs on all recent Mac OS X and recent Windows OS versions. To get best performance requires a certain level of graphic card abilities but the 30 day trial allows you to check it out. I plan on using it as my eventual Aperture replacement and am actively planning and preparing for the migration.

ON1 RAW has a Sync function that provides similar results to Lift and Stamp but does not include "batch" cropping.

ON1 is a newly written RAW processor. The 2017 RAW release, while usable, was short of features, sometimes buggy and I don't think ready. Numerous point releases followed by the 2018 RAW release added a lot of needed features and fixed a lot of bugs. However, some people are still having issues and griping about missing features. Others compare it to programs that have years or decades of development. I think this App is already good but has amazing potential to become much better over time.

Below is a list if my likes and dis-likes in no particular order. The list is also not exhaustive.

ON1 pros

A non destructive RAW processor that uses the graphic card for performance.

It is a Browser, not a DAM. Organized your images in the Finder

Move things around in the Finder using the Browser. This helps keep the side car files with the image.

It has a database/catalog feature that is used to speed up searches and preview display.

It stores adjustments in side car files as well as the catalog. Lots of redundancy here.

It stores metadata in industry standard side car files as well as the catalog. More redundancy.

More free presets available than you could ever use. Great for trying different looks quickly.

Great masking features and relatively easy to use.

Lots of training movies available for free.

Buy forever with discounted upgrades, or subscribe and own the current subscribed to release forever without expiration.

Optionally subscribe to a Pro level access and get extended training, access to experts, image critiques, forums.

A user driven feature request.

Lens correction.

ON1 cons

Apertures DAM is better than a Browser.

Still has bugs - one of which is keeping me from jumping into a Aperture to ON1 RAW migration.

Still missing features that more mature programs have.

No Aperture conversion tool. If you want Aperture adjustments baked in, export a TIFF or JPEG from Aperture.

Very basic keyword, metadata and search capabilities

I need to leave Aperture in my work flow until the keyword and metadata features improve.

Lens correction can't find my lens, but it is in the list and can be accessed manually.

The support line is very busy.
