iCloud not downloading to Mac

Hi,

I've been struggling with iCloud Drive (Desktop & Documents) for a while now. Problems started with the uploading progress taking ages and not completing, although saying something like 'uploading 100 mb of 100 mb' for example.

My iMac then became very slow which lead to me erasing the HD and starting over with a fresh install.

However, now, my iCloud Drive Documents and Desktop folder won't download to my iMac.

These folders show up as empty locally. The folders Numbers, TextEdit, Pages, Keynote, Preview etc. are working fine, though.

On iCloud.com, all folders and files are accessible like they should. The Desktop and Documents folders on my iPad Pro and iPhone are working and in sync with iCloud.com, as they should as well.

I've had a phone call with Apple Support today of one hour and eighteen minutes. An Engineer is now going to look into my issue, but as my business activities depend on iCloud/my iMac and are pretty much stalled right now, I decided to ask the community.

Any help would be appreciated! Thank you.

What I've done already:

  • Log out of iCloud totally
  • Disabling iCloud Drive
  • Disabling solely the synced Desktop and Documents folder
  • Remove the CloudDocs folder in Application Support in my iMac user library
  • Kill the bird and icloudd processes
  • Restarting the iMac
  • Turning the iMac off, removing the power cord
  • Spent time waiting for a miracle to happen
  • Restarted the wifi network
  • Switched to cabled internet

Yes, the files re-appeared. However, Finder turns irresponsive often when performing moving, editing and other tasks on iCloud stored files. If not doing so, Finder's progress bar on the task is either stuck on (see images)...

So it's either "X of X" or "Zero of X"...

Anyways, thanks for keeping me up to date on your similar issue. After all, patience was the best solution. However, I still believe that syncing files should become faster somehow.

Hi compupower

I am wondering if there is some broader issue today. I have been struggling with this on a new MacBook Pro all day -- I haven't been able to start the syncing of documents.

I've tried the same things you have have in your list - particularly tried the removal of CloudDocs and killing bird and icloudd processes a few times.

I just can't seem to get it to work, and given the timing of your question, I can't help but think something more significant is wrong here.

My productivity is dependent on getting my files to sync. I'm actually trying to get my 4th MacBook Pro with touch bar going, as I've had a number of duds so far. This software issue seems to be the latest issue in a string of them.

I'm kinda glad to know that I'm not the only one struggling at the moment. Let's keep each other up to date through this topic. Hopefully I'll get a response from the engineer who's going to look into the issue soon enough.

Like you said, we kinda depend on it to work. I need to do client work atm, which I'm unable to due to the inaccessibility of my project files...
