For my 2017 MBP, I got a transparent keyboard cover so that the keys stay clean. And I use a microfiber cloth to separate the two halves when closed. Both products have good reviews on Amazon. Does that sound like a good idea? I am worried that the dirt trapped in the cloth can scratch the body/screen. Thanks.

Have you considered the very slight amount of clearance between the delicate screen coating and the tops of the keys? You are making that distance much smaller, possibly negative.
Have you considered the amount of cooling air that will no longer be drawn in through the keyboard area and the amount of heat that can no longer radiate out through the keyboard area?
The microfiber cloth serves to dampen the impact. (Besides, Keyboard of the new MacBook Pro scratches the screen. | MacRumors Forums )
I haven't thought about the effect on cooling but I imagine it wouldn't be too bad, especially for daily usage. I'd rather have a clean keyboard.
I just want to understand the truth of the matter, not trying to be stubborn. I will take your opinion into consideration though. Thank you. It's a useful discussion because many seem to believe otherwise. (e.g. on Amazon)
Okay, someone with the source. That has convinced me. Thanks! Maybe I will just put on the keyboard protector when I use it and remove afterward (until I stop babying the friggin laptop). Hopefully it hasn't done any damage in the past few days...
I personally would not put anything between the keyboard and display. And I would not use a keyboard cover.
And I would agree with BobTheFisherman on both points.
Would you care to elaborate? If there is nothing harmful about it, this system seems to provide decent protection albert rather inconvenient... Thank you.
