I spent an hour going through duplicates upon duplicates of bookmarks on Safari last night and when I went back in to use it on my recently purchased iMac, all the bookmarks are BACK! how do I delete them and keep them deleted? Thanks!

If there are many duplicate Bookmarks in Bookmarks side bar .
Right click on an item and click on New folder .
An Untitled folder will be created .
Then drag and drop duplicate Bookmarks over the untitled folder , so that they will merge in the folder , once the process of it is completed again again right click on the untitled folder and click on delete it to get permanently deleted .
