Trying to create a playable DVD from iMovie

I've spent the last few days trying to create a DVD movie from an iMovie I created. I can get the file to my desktop as an MP4 or even copy it from iTunes as an m4v but when I put it on a DVD+R disc and try to play it in my DVD player I get "data disk" so it won't play.

It will play on my computer but not the DVD player. I'm so frustrated.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So, it's me again. I created the video, burned a copy and everything. Gave it to the person to review and they're happy with it.. so now I want to start burning more.

I opened the .dvdproj file in iDVD and Burn is not available... it's greyed out. I tried making an .img then right clicking and burning the image to the disk but for whatever reason, that won't play on my dvd.

I found the iDVD manual online but it doesn't say anything about what to do when the burn is greyed out. I tried starting a new project and I'm still not getting the button or the burn option in file...

Thoughts?

p.s. why does iMovie/iDvd hate me? I'm taking this personally... 😟

Hi, Tammy,

If you are using an external burner, plug it in to your computer and insert a disc before opening your iDVD project. You should get the burn option then. Check your cable connection and make sure that everything is tight and plugged in both on the DVD burner side and the computer side. If you are not using an external burner, perhaps you need to insert a DVD before opening the project.

However, as I understand it you are able to save a disc image and burn a disc from the .img, but it won't play in your DVD player. Play your disc image, not the disc itself, on your computer with the DVD Player app on your Mac. If it plays fine then iDVD has done its job and successfully rendered an iMovie project. The problem might be with your media (should be - R disc, not +R) or with your external DVD player. Try playing your -R disc project on another DVD player and see if it reads and plays it. The friend to whom you gave your first successfully burned disc apparently can play it on his/her DVD player. So you know that you can successfully burn a DVD project.

Good luck with this. I think that if you work with it awhile everything will fall into place.

Cheers,

Rich

I'm convinced that the closer I get the further it is to the finish...

So, I was able to burn disc one totally. I closed that project and opened Disc 2, edited the project info and everything else... hit the burn button and it keeps getting stuck on the process movies - asset encoding spot....

Overnight stuck... it just stops. I still have the spinning bouncy ball but if I right click on the iDvd icon it says in grey Application not responding.

I tried deleting the software and reinstalling and starting over multiple times...

Any idea what may cause the freeze?

I solemnly swear to never make a DVD again after this project is complete...

Thank you all, so much, for holding my hand and helping me get through this.

have no idea what any of this means but after 24 hours of it being stuck I force quit it again and am going to see if the first DVD gets stuck like this one did.

This is the information given in the comments of the force quit section. There's a lot more than I'm posting but I can't seem to post all of it on the site.

Sometimes the revolving burn ball does stop during the burning process. It looks like it is freezing but the burning process is actually still going on. Sometimes it will continue that way for hours if you have a complex movie. If that's the case here the burn eventually will finish if you wait it out. Since you have successfully created a disc image it is very puzzling that you cannot consistently burn a DVD from it. You may have a defective or dirty burner.

As a test, to see if your issue is related to just this one project, try sharing out a shorter movie at 480 resolution size (or 540 if 480 is not available). Make the quality settings lower. Then see if iDVD can burn it.

Yes, you can burn from a disc image. That's the recommended way of doing it. Save your iDVD project as a disc image from the iDVD file menu. After the rendering is complete, see if your disc image plays the project completely. Click on the disc image icon and play it on your Mac's DVD player app. If it plays fine then you know that iDVD has properly rendered the project and it has done its job. Then control-click on the disc image icon on your desk top and a drop down menu will appear giving you the option to burn a disc. The option will not appear unless you have an internal DVD burner or an external DVD burner that is plugged in to your computer. Insert a DVD-R disc and see if you can get a successful burn. If you cannot, then there is something wrong with your DVD burner, or the DVD disc media, or the DVD Player you are trying to play it on.

No way of knowing how long it will take to burn, as that varies from project to project.
