So setting the display to 1920 x 1080 at 60 Hz doesn't work? Or the setting isn't sticking? Or are you trying to run a different resolution with this display via the particular DisplayPort, Thunderbolt or HDMI connection? Does a different monitor work? What's the display connection, and which vendor and model of display are you using? (I'm here assuming that this is an external display, and that this isn't the MacBook, MacBook Pro or iMac internal display.)

Dell P2212H is the monitor. Connected by thunderbolt/HDMI. I go to System Preferences > Displays > Scaled and 1920 is not an option. If I push "Gather Windows" > Scaled there is an option for 1920 x 1080, but no "Apply" or button that changes it... I click it and nothing happens.

Also, worth noting that once every few hours the monitor will work suddenly - only to go out again shortly thereafter.

Thanks

See if the display works better when booted in Safe Mode. I'd also reset the PRAM/NVRAM and SMC; that probably won't help, but it's harmless and sometimes does resolve oddities.

Then try narrowing this to the Mac or to the display or the cable. Try a different display, and try a different cable with the problem display.

Thunderbolt and HDMI are different connection paths, so there's a chain of adapters in use here? Test with different adapters or simpler paths, too; if there's one or more adapters in use here.

Per the Dell P2212H specs, that display is "optimized" for 1920 x 1280 at 60 Hz, so at least that part is correct.
