Try removing the earbud's soft cover in order to clean it and the rest of the earbud. The earbuds probably still work but are all plugged up so you can't hear anything. The same thing can happen with earwax build-up.
You will have to figure out how to remove the Vaseline. I'm afraid I don't know what your earbuds are like.
Like Kappy said, you should try cleaning your earbuds of as much Vaseline as you can. If they are completely hardshell and there is no soft cover to remove, then I recommend using some Kleenex or paper towel and just trying to rub off as much of the Vaseline as you can. If it still doesn't work then there may be some inside the speaker it's self and I'm not sure if You'd be able to clean them at that point.

I don't think the Apple earbuds have a soft cover but are a completely hard shell, so I have no idea if they can be disassembled. You may not be able to remove the grease. Sorry.
