Bootcamp "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition" error.

Hi, all. I'm trying to remove Windows from my Mac to free up more space. However, when I try to remove it the conventional way (by using Boot Camp), I get an error that says "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition." It goes on to say "The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows." I already tried erasing the disk and unmounting it in Disk Utility. Any help would be appreciated.

MacBook, macOS Sierra (10.12.5)

Hi LonerT,

I saw that you asked for people to put in the command.

2: Apple_APFS Container disk1 202.0 GB

3: Microsoft Basic Data BOOTCAMP 8.0 GB disk0s3

4: Microsoft Basic Data BOOTCAMP 40.6 GB disk0s4

This should work in your case as well.

Run (only once)

diskutil eraseVolume jhfs+ BC1 disk0s3

diskutil eraseVolume jhfs+ BC2 disk0s4

diskutil mergePartitions jhfs+ BCMP disk0s3 disk0s4

diskutil list

If you only see disk0s3, then

diskutil eraseVolume fat32 BOOTCAMP disk0s3

and now run BC Assistant and click on Restore/Remove.

Hey, hate to ask you for help but I've got pretty much the same error... I tried something you posted earlier and it didn't seem to work 😟 Think you could lend a hand?

Apple should really pay guys like you to help people... you're super stars xD

EDIT: bit of a backstory on the problem.... Winblows (I hate Windows 10) Tried to update against my will as it always seems to do these days... This time the update even though I didn't interrupt it has corrupted the boot so I need to get rid of it.

Hello Loner T

I am having a similar problem with my Macbook.

I am trying to create an installation file for Windows 10 for my new PC I have built. I am trying to use Boot Camp to allow me to prepare the USB.

/dev/disk0 (internal, physical):

#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER

0: GUID_partition_scheme *121.3 GB
disk0

1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB
disk0s1

2: Apple_HFS Macintosh HD 120.5 GB
disk0s2

3: Apple_Boot Recovery HD 650.0 MB
disk0s3

/dev/disk1 (disk image):

#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER

0: CCCOMA_X64FRE_EN-US... +4.7 GB disk1

When I typed in the command diskutil list this came up. When I typed diskutil cs list nothing came up.

If you could help me figure out why I am getting the "The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows." message, that would be great!

Hi Loner T - are you able to assist me as well?

I'm hoping to remove all partitions back to just a single volume. BCA has failed. I've tried erasing/modifying in Disk Utility to no avail (at the direction of Apple Care Support). Numerous contacts to support (and my own efforts to fix) have seemingly made my diskutil list unrecognizable to anything I can decipher, and support has now suggested I visit a store to resolve the issue. The soonest appointment is a week from now. Any assistance I can get before then would be great.. Or, if it's not salvageable, I'll just wait for my store appointment.

Here's the results of diskutil list.

Hello everyone,

I am experiencing the same problem. I am trying to remove windows via bootcamp from my new Macbook Pro, but this error message appears when trying to do so: "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition. The terminal command gives me the following output:

Hi Loner T. I think you deserve an Apple accommodation for all of the support on this issue. I just ran into this problem this morning trying to remove the bootcamp partition and found this thread. If possible, could you help me out? I'm on an early 2015 Macbook Air running 10.13.3. I thought I just had an OS partition and a Windows 10 partition, but I'm worried something has gotten mucked up now that I'm seeing the error from BC Assistant. This is the output from diskutil list:
