Can I use my US iPhone in the UK?

I'm moving to London soon and I want to know if there is some way that I can just purchase a plan from a UK carrier and use my current iPhone instead of having to purchase a new phone. Is there a way for me to deactivate my current carrier settings and just have a new SIM card installed once I move?

Only your current carrier can release the lock they hold on it. You need to contact them to find out their condition to release it.

But once my current carrier unlocks it I should be able to have my service transferred over to a carrier in the UK, correct?
