I held out hope that this issue may be fixed with iOS 11, but a few moments after updating a moment ago the problem still remains.

A software update cannot fix a hardware problem. If the screen keeps blanking out, or as in your case won't come on except after a period of time, then you have a screen issue. Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of the nearest Apple Store to have the device examined. They will explain your options from there.

I have exactly the same problem!
Like you, I have reset my iPhone to factory conditions and started it over again as a new device.
I have noticed that:
- the phone operates as normal even though the screen is blacked out.
- after a minute or so of pressing the home button, it does return to life.

- the seems to be linked to a fault with the screen brightness (the screen will either flicker, remain on full brightness, or very low brightness immediately before going black.

I held out hope that this issue may be fixed with iOS 11, but a few moments after updating a moment ago the problem still remains.
