How to install OSX on an IMAC A1224 with a new hard drive?

So a friend bought an IMAC A1224 many years ago. The hard drive has click failed. I replaced the hard drive today and need to download OSX on it. I've read on ifixit that I need a recovery DVD. I'm wondering if I can download it on a PC as an iso or bin/cue file, burn to DVD, then recover the IMAC? Nearby I have a friend with Sierra on his IMAC, can he download and burn the DVD?

The System predates internet recovery.

You would need the original installers that came with the system at time of purchase, you may be able to obtain these by calling Apple (1-800-MY-APPLE)

Apple does not keep ISO's or any other format for end users to download from outside the App Store

there are a number of other ways to install an instance of OS X on that mac but I would start with the original disks and work from there if possible. In addition 10.6, 10.7 and 10.11 would be your only other purchase options unless you have 10.8 and 10.9 in your possession as I write this. The system supports OS 10.4.10 - 10.11.5
