I have 2 back up places...my Apple Airport Time Capsule, and an external hard drive.
the external drive is filling up.....how can I delete the back ups.....the earlier one is september 2016...

Only by using the Time Machine application can you delete selected backups for removal. DO NOT attempt to drag them into the Trash.
If you have no need for whatever else is on the disk drive then I simply recommend reformatting it using Disk Utility. It's faster and less hassle.

Well...I found your advice regarding NOT dragging the backups into the Trash until after I've done so. Now I can't seem to drag them out of the Trash, nor delete them. What do I do now?
