Well, if you will look at the link I posted, it explains exactly what the stick does. It's a bit more than a router - it streams movies, etc. You will need a subscription I believe; and, does your 2008 Macbook have an HDMI port? I had missed that - the stick appears to need an HDMI connection. It is not USB. Here are the requirements (shown on the page I linked to):

Welllllll, I'm new to this. I'm still in the learning curve trying to figure out if I need this thing I got for free. I have a MacBook which is working perfectly fine and I'm a bit fearful that by adding an unnecessary technology I'll do something irreparable. As far as I can tell, this technology is like a mini router that you can put on your TV. I have an old pre USB TV, a 2008 MacBook, and a relatively new iPad- 2015.

So thanks for getting back to me. Any bets on what it would do to my MacBook running Mavericks?

Hello Brian et al,

The ATT person said I could use it w my MacBook laptop in conjunction with the DirectvnowAdsInc website. The ads drove me crazy so I dc'd the site and have HULU no ads. MUCH better.

So geniuses, I think that I can use this w my MacBook using Mavericks plugging in to the USB port. My old analog Sony Trinitron TV, a real beauty sits in its cabinet unused since the great digital fraud. The AFS has a cool little SIRI like voice activated control that could be handy. Still afraid of what I can't undo.

I had looked into those and didn't care for the need for a subscription; I like my iPad method: it's free! And the stations I have apps for make 95% of their content available via their app - I only occasionally come across a movie I want to watch which then gives me the "this content is not available in your country" message. Most of the stuff is available.

So Babowa (et al) thanks for hanging in there from the beginning. I can't believe that I didn't see that the working end of the wire wasn't a USB after all. So all of you that kept telling me it wasn't a USB, but was really another set of 4 letter sequences were right.

In my due diligence I've noticed that I can purchase an interface to the AFS end and the 3 colored wires - red-yellow-white coming from the analog tv. Anyone of you geniuses seen this and can report if it works?

I'm still burned about the Digital-cable conspiracy. THE REASON that we all needed to pay for the cable tv that had been free with our antennas was: better signal AND no ads on cable tv. Hahahahah. Tell me no lies.

At this point I'm almost ready to mail it back to ATT. I'm completely cordless nearly for so long I'm allergic to ads.

As I tried to say at the beginning, the AFS lets you access streaming video from the internet. It is handy to use with an HDTV, making it similar to a newer smart TV. But you can access the same content using any computer or iPad, either using the browser or vendor apps. So this gizmo is of no use to you, and you'd be wasting your time trying to make it work with your analog TV.
