old iPhone 4 still says Sprint at the top?

I have an old iPhone 4 that used to be connected with sprint. i upgraded to an iPhone 6 a while back and when i went to use this phone as an iPod it still says Sprint at the top with signal bars. i tried to make a call but wouldn't go through. what does this mean? shouldn't it say No Service?
