RAM Manufacturer Opinions

HI everyone. Looking for some advice on places to buy RAM for my Mac Pro. Looks like most places that have been recommended by people on the forums are charging around $400 for 2GB (2x1GB) of RAM. Manufacturers I'm talking about are newegg, transintl, macsales, 4allmemory, etc. I've found a few that are a little cheaper and was wondering if anyone had any experiences with them. Memory to go and power line memory both are a bit cheaper with memory to go selling for about $366 and Power Line Memory selling for $338. I believe I've seen members saying that they've had good experience with the memory to go modules. Has anyone used the Power Line Memory modules? A link to the product is:

Also, any other opinions are more than appreciated. I'm certainly not averse to paying the extra $40-$70 for something that I know will provide good results but if either of these prove to be good choices, then I'm also not averse to saving a little chaching!

Thanks.

"I ordered 2gbs (1gbx2) from Maxupgrades and had to RMA it after about 3 months. It was strange from the start. Sometimes it would show up as only 1gig and then it stopped working completely. It got real hot. I wouldn't suggest it."

Thanks for sharing your experience with MaxUpgrades. I don't hear too much about them but the facts they use Samsung RAM, provide the option of their own heatsinks (which look high quality), or Apple's, and the price is among the lowest, I'm still considering them for my next purchase.

As Hunter Ware points out, ANY company, even Crucial can ship out less than stellar sticks. (As a bystander, it's hard to judge something from one negative incident.) I also agree that the service you receive when bad things happens is just as, if not more important than the quality of the product.

In that vein, can I ask how the RMA with MaxUpgrades went?

Did they give you a hassle? Did they give you a refund or swap the bad ones for new. If refund, did they charge a restocking fee? Did you have to pay for shipping the modules back?

Service so far has been pretty good. I say so far cause I've not yet sent them back. I had to have them help me locate the order number and then get a RMA number. I'll probably be sending them back today. I'll be sure to post back if I have problems with the return or the replacements.
As a bit of a side note...i ordered 1gig (512x2) from OWC and so far haven't had problems.

Hello,

I can confirm your post. I just got the OWC RAM delivered, popped the lid and the ones that arrived were the EXACT same as the originals that came with my MP purchased at the Apple store. Paid only $347 USD plus overnight shipping. I'm thrilled to say the least. I now have 4Gigs and I have opened everything I can think of with files, such as Apeture, PS CS2, Capture One Pro, Safari, MS Office apps (all), Acrobat 7 Pro...... Activity Monitor says I have 1.57G free and no Page Outs.

I did some testing and also inquired at the Apple store. They recommended not running Safari, as it will use up all the memory. When I only had 2G that was true more so than now. I suspect the OS X virtual memory programming has a limit set to free RAM, and as soon as it reaches that percentage left, it goes off and sends everything to the hard drive for other things besides Safari. When I had only 2G, everything else ran slower than slow, except Safari. I'm sure the Rosetta app plays into it, but bottom line the sweet spot for me is 4G....... of course I always want more, but now on to adding hard drives. This thing flies now, yahoo!

I've been using OWC for 15 years for all my RAM needs and have never had a problem. Their price on 2 X 1GB is $347 so I ordered two. I'm getting Hynix DIMMs which is what Apple currently installs. I plan to send them the 2 X 512MB that is coming with my MP for a $120 rebate. This makes the total price $575 for a 4GB config compared to $1100 using Apple's CTO.

Who wouldn't go this route?

I've heard nothing but good things about Ramjet so I
gave them an order, 2 x 1GB $428 and it has been
running fine.

Isn't that about $100 high for typical US prices?

I ordered the cheapest 2 gig sticks I could find. Great
results. Mac seems faster and more comfortable. It's weird
but I think everything seems smoother somehow - like it's
skating on a fine layer of graphite dust or something. I
bet it's all mental though - not the speed, but the
smoothness thing.

I ordered from http://www.akibakan.com but I wouldn't
recommend them unless you live in Japan. 😉

Oh, and the sticks were manufactured by Elixir which can
be searched for. Cheep and great ECC FB memory. 😉
