If a program does not give you the option to not display a menu icon, you can't turn it off as long as the program is running.
We know how to do it. You can re-code every app you have installed to add an option not to display a menu icon or you can rewrite macOS so it doesn't display any menu icons. Or you can try talking the developers to change their apps.
Of course you can choose not to run any apps that won't let you disable the menu icon.
Simple. 😎

Yes, that is the only way if the developers are too stupid to provide the option.
The Garmin app is a good example. In order to update your Garmin you have to install their software which puts a stupid icon in the Status menu area. The menu serves no actual purpose. It doesn't provide any status whatsoever nor does it provide any app functions short of opening the App.
You can try to disable the LaunchAgent that puts the icon in the menu, but for the Garmin app, that completely disabled the functionality of the App (it crashed).
Since I only need to update my Garmin once a year, I just uninstall the app until I need it again.
Ok. What about applications like Bartender or Vanilla, that allow you hide some elements in the menu bar?
As far as I understand, these programs do some changes in os x. If so, maybe it is possible to do it manually?
They make a virtual world and run the Status Menu items in that virtual world. The apps are still running but those programs just don't show them in their virtual environment. They don't change how the programs work.

So its like a superstructure on menu bar?)
It just creates an app that pretends it is the menu bar and takes control of the display of the status menu items. They think they are running in the OS, but they are running within Bartender's framework.

Cool! Thanks, got it!)
reply for myself: i installed Vanilla. Looks great, keeping use it...
Some programs have an option in their preferences to disable such menu bar items. Otherwise I don't know.

Press control + option + command keys on the keyboard , take cursor over the icon and drag and drop the icon in the centre of the desktop .
Does not work.

Bad, bad Garmin. 😎
