do the SSDs in 2017 macbook pros support SMART status?

booted up my brand new macbook pro yesterday and am enjoying it greatly, however in disk utility it says that the S.M.A.R.T status of the internal drive is “not supported” which is a new one to me. Previous macbooks and macbook pros I’ve owned or helped friends with all had a smart status capable SSD. Apple support is stymied evidently there is no document they have access to which says specifically if I should be seeing a SMART status in disk utility or not. If I’m supposed to and I don’t then that in and of itself is an indication of a problem.

I understand that SMART was invented for HDDs but it’s really just a communications system for disk drives to report data about themselves to the computer. SSDs send totally different data about themselves than HDDs do, but it’s still quite valuable in predicting drive failure. I will be very disappointed if I can no longer check the wear leveling count or dead byte numbers on the new laptops.

I am just trying to verify that this is normal or not, or is there a new system I need to learn about that they use to report stats to the system? Does your recent macbook pro with SSD report a smart status in disk utility? Or does is say that it’s “not supported” like mine does?

The drives in the 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro are unique in a number of ways. They are the first appearance of NVME drives, rather than ACHI.

In addition, all the components are soldered to the board. There is no "slot" in the usual sense, but there is some sort of reserved connector on the board, possibly for testing or data rescue if the motherboard fails but the drive is not dead.
