Recording levels in LE 7.2.3

In the Logic Express pdf reference, page 201-' Adjusting the levels' it says "... the fader on the track Object sets it's playback level. The recording level is not set in Logic (sic)[should read Logic EXPRESS] it is set at the source ( the device supplying the input signal). ' I have only a USB M-Audio 49e MIDIController and a Samson USB mic. The mic has it's own output fader but I would be very grateful if anyone would explain how I can control the audio instrument input levels?

hi 55plus,

can you rephrase your quesiton, man. It doesn't make much sense as it is (at least for me). Audio instruments either generate the output through synthesis or use prerecorded sample libraries, so in effect it's still talking about playback level, which is adjusted through track object fader. Now, if you're talking about an audio track and how do you set the recording level, then it's a different story -- you would do it through your preamp, i.e. the input level going into logic.

oops... sorry... I guess I didn't say it right 😟
... but I meant the same thing :-P

[edit--and just for fun.. don't mean anything by
it]... but actually if you wanna be anal about it --
during mixdown they actually are recorded and the
level again is set through the playback level :-D

HI phile (no pun intended) I'm grateful for your help. You pointed out "that during mixdown they are recorded and the level AGAIN is set through the playback level." I see you are using Logic Pro and since I only have Express it could be that which causes confusion.

I do appreciate yout response and hope you will tell me where this info is about Track Object faders funtioning during mixdown?

hi 55plus... ohh I am really sorry for the late reply ... been extremely busy with house guests from abroad in the past couple of weeks 😟 ....

What I mean't was that logic will record what you feed it. Mixdown is just recording your midi/au instruments and grouping them into stems (to put it extremely roughly .... I mean this is kinda of a lame explanation)... So it depends how you setup your fader on the au as to how it will get recorded.... The level that you set the fader at will be the level it will get recorded at (asuming your master fader is at unity 0).... hmmm I am not sure how to explain it ....
