iCloud contacts button is on to share on my iCloud account but no contacts show up on my iCloud account. What else do I need to do?

I want to create an email group. A MacWorld article I read said to set up groups in iCloud on the MacBook Pro, and first make sure that my iPhone iCloud setting for contacts is switched ON. My iCloud settings for contacts has always been switched ON and my iCloud account still shows no contacts. How do I solve this so I can make groups?

Welcome to the Apple Community.

Please try the following…

  1. First check that all your settings are correct, that contact syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
  2. Make sure the contacts you are adding are added to your 'iCloud' group and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud group (you can do this by checking in groups), non iCloud contacts will not sync.
  3. If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your contacts are in the iCloud group, you might try unchecking contact syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling contact syncing.

Try going to iCloud.com using a computer to see if the items are there and whether they are from the device or the computer. That should show whether the device or the computer isn't syncing. If the computer, try going to System Preferences/iCloud and stop syncing. Wait a couple of minutes, then recheck syncing. If the device, go to Settings/Your Name/iCloud and do the above. You can also try signing out of iCloud and then sign in again.

My contacts recently all disappeared, and in their place are just numbers.

I had my icloud contacts sync 'on' previously, but now when i log into icloud.com and look in contacts, none of the contacts are there either - so obviously the sync wasn't working.

I tried toggling the icloud contacts 'on' and 'off', and now when i try to turn it back on, it says it will merge all of my icloud contacts. I hesitate to do this, because when i did that on my mac, it wiped out all the other contacts in my gmail account (some sort of communication via my phone where it tried to take the empty icloud contact list and sync it to my iphone contact list, which was synced to my gmail contact list, so then deleted my gmail contact list).

so a couple questions:

1) i don't think i'm going to be able to restore my contacts on my iphone, and plan to manually re-enter them. but how do i ensure that they will sync to both gmail and icloud? (without icloud erasing my gmail contacts?)

2) why didn't the contacts sync to icloud before, even though i had my contacts synced?

Thanks.
