As a note for future reference, you will be more likely to receive help if you give more information on what you have tried. Now I have no way to know, so I should start from taking the Linkstation out of the box...
- So Take the Linkstation out of the box 🙂
- Connect it to the router with a network cable, and start it up
Next you need to find out what ip-address the router gave the Linkstation. You might be able to see it from your routers menu (easier way), but if not you need to use the terminal application in osx.
- Use finder to search for 'Terminal' and open the application
- Check to see what your ip address is
if you are connected by ethernet type:
ifconfig en0
or if you are connected by wireless type:
ifconfig en1
You should see your ip-address (inet), take note of it. Also note the broadcast address mentioned at the end of the same row. Next type
ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
The xxx parts should be replaced with the broadcast address you noted previously (in other words you ping your broadcast address).

64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.727 ms (DUP!)
64 bytes from 192.168.1.102: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.052 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.100: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.203 ms (DUP!)
After you get a few rows, press ctrl+c to stop it. Look through the resulting rows, you will get an awnser from your router (usually the lowest or highest number), your own computer, and the Linkstation. My guess is that the Linkstation will have an ip address much like your computer, only 1-2 higher.
Copy the "suspect" ip-address and put it on the address row of your browser. You should be greeted by a page from the linkstation (or it will ask you for a username and password).
You will also have to use your manual, since I set mine up such a long time ago that I don't remember everything...
- Add a user under "Security setup" -> "User Setup"
- Add a share under "Security setup" -> "Shared folder setup"
You should then be able to access the linksstation by opening finder -> clicking cmd+k -> typing 'smb://linkstation
ip_address/share_youcreated'
For example: smb://192.168.1.103/dropadrops-files
You will be able to connect by leaving out the smb:// in front, but it will cause alot of problems. Don't even bother trying.
