Question

VIDEO FRAMES WERE DROPPED DURING PLAYBACK

now if this is NOT the most annoying thing ever then i don't know what is. can someone PLEASE tell me why while working in FINAL CUT (brand new/latest version) keeps saying VIDEO FRAMES WERE DROPPED while working on my brand new iMac:

iMac Retina 5K 27"

- 3.2 GHz Intel Core i5

- 8 GB 1867 MHz DDR3

- AMD Radeon R9 M390 2048 MB

this is absolutely ridiculous! i made sure all files were rendered yesterday and now in the morning it wont even play and it sounds like its skipping and stops etc.

iMac with Retina 5K display, iOS 10.3.3, 3.2 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1867 MH

sorry for my ranting. but i'm just so frustrated. im working off a 5TB external hard drive. 500gb left. i cant work off my iMac as we have way too many videos being created it would then need to be transfered at some point to a external HD but that would take too much time later down the road. the thing is. it just started doing this. so not sure as to 'why now'... but i'm trying to re-watch the final cut before i save/export for our site.

video length is 9 min.

using latest/greatest FCP

1TB iMac

Using Seagate 5TB HD

HI TOM thank you for your time. its connected via USB from external to imac. not sure if its usb2/usb3. (is there a difference in the connector ends? its def not thunderbolt. i restarted again and now it seems fine/running smoother. so i'll see what happens next.

do you have knowledge on a good external hard drive to connect to imac so that the connections run more smoothly? we make too many videos to use our imac hard drive on, would take too much time to work on imac then drag drop all files to external.

There could be more than one thing going on. If you go to the Apple menu and choose About This Mac and do a system report you can find the tab for USB to see if you have a mac capable of USB 3. If it is not then it's very likely that is the problem. If the Mac is capable of USB 3 then you have to find out if the drive is USB 3. If not then you don't have USB3 on both devices and that could be the issue. You haven't given enough information to help with diagnosis. If you are shooting 4K and not using proxy that could be the issue...the drive may be a poor, slow drive...but check the USB issue first. Your external drive should be connected via USB3, Firewire, or Thunderbolt.

So let me ask this to both you and Tom. If i'm working on a brand new iMac. 1TB and using brand new Final Cut Pro latest greatest. what should i be using as a back up HD, as i can't use the HD from the imac as we make too many videos AND space would be gone quick.

is there something else out there that i don't know of that connects to imac as a external HD with something other than usb?

You could consider a Thunderbolt 2 enclosure and a faster hard drive. I have 4HD's in my Thunderbolt 2 enclosure (OWC) and all of them are Western Digital Caviar Black drives (2TB). On my 4 drive firewire enclosure used for backup (also OWC) one of my hard drives is a Seagate but it's much much slower than my WD drives. Some Seagates are fast...but not mine. It's not impossible that you're out of memory. 8GB isn't a lot when running FCPx. Tom W. might comment more on that as I'm not an expert on the role of RAM and FCPx (not an expert on any of it, I must say).

What are the complete media specs? What drive are you using for playback? How big is it? How full is it?

What's the media exactly? How's the drive connected? USB2? USB3? Thunderbolt? You may have a conflict with other software or hardware.

The connector ends are the same. USB2 is not suitable for video. USB3 is minimum and may not be sufficient for some media.

The drive requirements depends on the specifications of the media.

i'm only shooting 1080p video - i do have USB-3 on my iMac and my EXT-HD is USB-3 as well.... its not doing it as much now after restarting...

That should work. If it continues, test it with a new admin user. Make sure the drive is connected directly to the computer and that no other devices are attached.

500GB left out of 5TB on drives is not much cushion. Minimum free space is 10% of capacity. Drive space left could be your problem.
