Some have said that the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser works. You really have nothing to lose trying it.
I personally use a regular monitor cleaner and paper towels to clean both the Apple Watch itself and its wristband.

They really are pretty close to magic.
The same thing happened to me. I used a Mr. Clean magic eraser sponge after removing the band from the watch. Rinse in clear water and it should be as good as new.
Any ideas for cleaning the white Apple Watch band? My new black jacket turned it purple.
