I opened an email from an Outlook account in iPad mail and checked the full email address by clicking on the email name. It was bogus. From that point on, the Outlook account was stuck checking mail and wouldn't respond. Did the full email address contain a virus that knocked out my Outlook account? By the way, I fixed the account by deleting it and adding it again.

Are you sure? I opened the email and the only thing I clicked on was the email sender's name. Like I said, the full email address was bogus so then I just deleted the email. That's when the Outlook account hung (in continuous Checking Mail mode) so I had to delete the account and re-add it so it would work properly.
Actually, it's a very old way to spread a virus. But as you've been told there is no virus that can affect your iPad.
Unless your iPad is jailbroken there's no way you could be infected. The potential infection may have tried to execute hence why the account hung/became slow.
Should Apple or Microsoft be informed anyway? This seems like an entirely new way to spread a virus!
