volume buttons not working on Mac

Hey, My Mac book pro's volume, pause and skip buttons and brightness buttons do not appear to be doing anything. I press them and they do not do their intended purpose (they don't do anything). My hypothesis is that I turned them accidentally from volume etc. keys to F5, F6 etc. keys. I do not know how I did this however (did not go into settings). Anyone know what is going on?

Try the following set of instruction

1 Shut Down your macbook

2 Press the power button and immediately press "cmd" + "alt" + "R" + "P" at the same time

3 Keep holding "cmd" + "alt" + "R" + "P" while it powers on and the macbook while make a chime sound

4 Keep holding until the macbook chimes three times

5 On the 3rd chime release the "cmd" + "alt" + "R" + "P"

6 Macbook will start up normally and require your login details

Test the volume buttons to see if they are working
