Sierra Running REALLY SLOW After Upgrade to 10.12.6

I upgraded to 10.12.6 recently and my computer is running REALLY SLOW.

My usage hasn't changed -- browsers, music, simple spreadsheets, bla bla bla, ...

I've rebooted (and that seems to help for a while), Forced Quit apps (again, helps a bit), ...

My Activity Monitor shows there is little System activity and not much user.

My computer is old, my CPU not very fast but it has worked well for me and I have a pile of RAM.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the offer of discount :-)

I did some of the things you suggest and am confused with some of the others.

Launch Agents -- to trash

System Preferences I seem to have 14 items. Do you mean to remove them all?

User uploaded file

I noticed from the EtreCheck that Spotify was running. I hardly use it at all so removed it. Who knows.

When I tried to empty the trash I got an error:

You say to uninstall BetterSnapTool, EEventmanager, AudioHiJack. completely.

BetterSnapTool is an app my son put me on and I use it alot. Eeventmanager used to pop up every time I booted the machine asking for permission. After some Googling I learned it is somehow part of my Epson Scanner software -- will I mess up my scanning if I delete the EE?

I use AudioHijack every day and couldn't do without it.

I'm sure my external is on its last legs like everything else on this computer. I have a scheduled daily backup of my internal HD to the external. I guess I could unplug and run a manual backup when I thought of it but ...

I know we're handcuffed to Apple and to Google but with Gmail, photos, drive, my Android stuff it would be inconvenient to dump Chrome.

The next couple of months I'm under all sorts of challenges -- a new computer set up would not be a nice thing to undergo. If I can get to the fall I better get shopping / planning / ...

Bla Bla Bla ... who said this stuff was easy?!

I can't thank you enough for the attention you've showered on me.

Thanks.

No idea what this stuff means but it looks like stuff with old software and especially with Adobe ...

Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to do that please read https://www.apple.com/support/backup/. To learn how to use Time Machine read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac. The reason for creating a backup is that the symptoms you describe could be indicative of an impending hard disk drive failure, so securing your data is a primary concern.

Then, shut down your Mac and restart it in "Safe Mode". To learn how to do that please read Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support. Compare how your Mac works in Safe Mode to how it has been, and describe your observations in a reply to this Discussion.

Then, restart normally. If the same problem returns, please read the section If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode for Apple's recommended actions.

Finally, you can temporarily create a new User Account, and log in to that account to determine if the problem also exists when logged in to that Account. To learn how to do that read How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac. When you are finished troubleshooting, you can remove the temporary User Account by following these instructions: macOS Sierra: Delete a user or group. Before removing it, confirm you don't need any of the files you might have created in that Account.

Let me know what you determine.

Thanks Lexiepex,

It always freaks me out when I see the millions of files under the hood :-)

After cleaning up stuff as best I can etreCheck now gives me a grade of "Poor" -- I take it an improvement over "Below Average."

Who knows. Gotta be better to clean up old stuff. I take it the OS Upgrade is running into stuff it doesn't like. Maybe I'll just keep my eyes open and hope for the best.

Hey, now I know about EtreCheck and AppCleaner!

I know it is time to get shopping for a new computer after seven years -- too bad Apple seems to be turning itself into a phone company and letting the computers languish.

Thanks for your help.

Jul 28, 2017 2:13 PM in response to John Galt

I did the safe boot and it was really slow and once launched the screen would "shimmer" or "flicker" or something.

And the basic tasks -- like checking my email on the browser (not mail client), ... -- were really slow and "stuttery."

So I rebooted in the normal mode and it took FOREVER. Chrome launched but the tabs just "spun." I went away and an hour later (so I have no idea how long it took) the tabs have loaded, the stuff seems to be working.

So, fingers crossed, I figure I've washed out whatever gremlin I had; I fully expect the gremlins to return.

Thanks for your help John Galt and Esquared.

1. Go to SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems:

remove all entries, with the minus sign underneath the list.

then restart,

do not start anything that was in the LoginItems

same issues? probably not:

2. there are some softwares that I propose to uninstall completely:

- wondershare software: badly programmed, does not do anything for you and can cause issues.

- PCtools (antivirus) software: a killer.

- Arcana Startup sound: in SystemPreferences.

- Arc software.

3. Then restart.

make a new etrecheck list, use the "clean up" button in there wherever you see it, then post the list.

Jul 29, 2017 4:36 AM in response to jayessemm

Dragging to the Trash (do it in launchpad) is only for apps downloaded from the Appstore. You can also select and hold the app in launchpad and click the little x on it.

Good apps have an uninstaller, separate or in the dmg file.

For simple apps you can use App Cleaner.

We can manually remove the leftovers, if any, after you have presented the next etrecheck list.

BTW you can remove the (very old) RogueAmoebe remover at the same time.

More RAM might help.

The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times and a hard drive from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I had 6GB installed on an early 2008 iMac supposedly limited to 4 GB and noticed an improvement.

Thanks for the reply.I def need some help.Or a new computer..

I had the RAM maxxed out @ 16GB w/ Crucial from OWC.

I believe it was the Lion update when my machine went completely nuts & after a few days on the phone with Apple I was told to dig up the factory ram & re-install it..I did that & the computer works fine..After major updates I try re-installing the Crucial RAM & my machine never boots up,

Not succeeded complete removal of the s**t:

- in Homefolder(yourname)->Library->LaunchAgents:

delete all three files.

in MacintoshHD->Library-LaunchAgents:

- In SysremPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems:

remove all entries with the minus sign underneath the list

RESTART

- uninstall BetterSnapTool, EEventmanager, AudioHiJack. completely.

do not use Chrome for a while.

empty the Trash Bin.

Restart again.

disconnect the external disks, they may be dying.

It should be better, tell us.

If I were Apple I'd give you a discount 😁

Jul 31, 2017 7:15 AM in response to jayessemm

- Homefolder-Library-LaunchAgents: yes.

- SystemPreferences-Users&Groups->LoginItems: yes select all, then use the minus sign underneath to remove: this does not uninstall, just prevents that it is always started. After that restart.

- the 3 tools: they really don't emhance the workings of the OS: get rid of them. but perhapsAudioHiJack does not cause issues. Start it by hand when you need it, quit it when you are done.

- the external disks: you can have more information on that: Read about DriveDx, download the trial version of DriveDx:

https://binaryfruit.com/drivedx

Install it and install the Sat Smart Driver:

https://binaryfruit.com/drivedx/usb-drive-support

when done restart;

connect the externals and see how their health is by running DriveDx.

- You don't miss anything by not using Chrome, you don't need to uninstall it, just for a while do not start it but use Firefox or Safari.

- If the EE software is there for scanning on the Epson (I am not 100% sure of that), leave it be (also in the LoginItems).

Note: there is a good chance that one of the externals is dying, replace it as soon as possible when DriveDx shows that.

Jul 31, 2017 9:30 AM in response to Lexiepex

Man, take everything away and you get "Good Performance!" :-)

I did the cleanup on that one Spotify -- "Executible not found" But couldn't find the user launch agent one.

Thanks for the DriveDx tip. It tells me my external is healthy so that's one thing I don't have to worry about.

I'm running FireFox now and will stick with it until I forget.

Thanks again!
