Can't transfer my videos to iTunes.

I couldnt find a topic on this subject, so I hope this is not a duplicate. If it is, I apologize now.
Ok, I have been able to transfer my videos to my iTunes before, but for some reason, I can't now. I use a separate program to convert to Mpeg-4, and then drag/drop the converted file into my iTunes. Now, I cannot drap/drop my videos into iTunes. I even tried to drag/drop the same video files that were already in iTunes, and I can't. Is there any advice on this subject?
Also, I was going to re-install my iTunes, but was wondering if all my files/playlists would be saved as is; or if there is a way to make sure they are all backed up.
