Photoshop is saying there's not enough RAM mmm, this shouldn't be happenin

Ok, so i got a message coming up on photoshop after i tried to import an image and it said "Could not import the clipboard because there is not enough memory (RAM).", so went to shop got a GB of ram. Now its in my G5 imac (not the isite) and it shows up in that file 'About This Mac' under Memory 1.5 GB DDR SDRAM(so its in there). so went in to photoshop with a happy face and it still comes up with the same message when i try to copy a picture in. What am i doing wrong, HELP!!

G5 imac, Mac OS X (10.4.6), its 17inches across the screen, its a nice size as well

allas, Welcome to the discussion area!

Have you checked the Photoshop preferences? I'm pretty sure that there is a maximum RAM setting in the preferences. I know that Photoshop Elements has one in the preferences under "Memory & Image Cache".

see i tried that i can see the RAM is there {look like this}
Memory Usage
Available RAM: 1471MB
Maximum Used by Photoshop: 85% = 1250MB

You can change the persentage, so i changed it to 85% started up photoshop again still did not work. Theres Cache settings above it and its on 'levels: 6' mabby that has somthing to do with it?

This is not a true memory error. It usually means you had a big old gob of text from Word in the clipboard when you launched photoshop. Word tends to give PS indigestion (probably from all those extraneous invisible characters). The simplest thing is to 1. ignore it, or 2. Command+C on something that's not part of office before launching PS.

EDIT BTW Increasing RAM usage in PS above 50 to 60% can play havoc with PS performance. You'd probably get better results in PS if you put it back to the default setting. Nothing you can do in memory/cache settings has the slightest effect on this dialog box.

Try dragging the pic out of word to the desktop then dropping it into your PS file.

The easiest way to reset defaults will reset everything, which is to quit PS, then restart while holding down command shiftoption and saying yes when asked if you want to delete the settings file. FWIW, the PS default for memory is 50%.
