AirPods won't connect

Ok. So I got some AirPods today and I was in the car when I was trying to connect them. I held the button on the back and it flashed amber for a second but never connected to my phone. I had a buddy in the car who had an iPhone as well but they didn't connect to his phone either. They didn't connect to my watch by accident either. I've held the button on the back numerous times for long periods of time as well. It never flashes white. The white light stays on and once I let go, the green light automatically starts flashing again. I've tried letting them charge, turning my phone off then on again. I've tried closing the case and opening it back up with hold the button. I don't know what to do. Someone please help me before I lose my mind.
