If I want to preview 16bit tiff files with the space bar, they appear completely black. In Preview the black will change to grey. This only happens when the images are horizontal. If they are upright, everything is fine.

What kind of images are these? There is no such thing as a "horizontal" or "upright" image. Are you using Preview to rotate the image? If so, Preview is probably corrupting it and then displaying a corrupted image.

What is the source of the 16bit TIFFs? I have no problems displaying them with QuickLook (spacebar). And fwiw, rotating them in Preview does not corrupt them.
