My Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad volume keys don't work properly.

My Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad volume keys don't work properly. The mute and increase volume don't work at all and the decrease volume moves all of the window tiles off the screen.

Function keys can be "mapped" for different actions.

Go to System Preferences > Keyboard > confirm the checkbox next to "Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" is checked. You can also eeeview settings under the Shortcuts tab.

I have the same issue. Just received and set up my new apple keyboard with numeric keypad but the option in the keyboard system preferences to control the function keys does not exist - this option is not there:

Select "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys"

My iMac is not recognizing the Function Keys or the Function Key alternative uses.

VERY frustrating.

Unfortunately with the magic keyboard and numeric pad, we do not have the option to check or uncheck this box. I have spent hours messing around with every shortcut possible and regrettably there are no ways to fix this problem yet. Apply needs to figure out a solution and upgrade to where it allows us to either check or uncheck the box or add a way for us to add a shortcut to our keyboard where we can choose the F10, F11 and F12 keys to function for volume. I do have some tricks to make this less frustrating. Go into system preferences, keyboard, shortcuts, mission control. There you will see where the F11 and F12 keys are assigned. Double click on that and remove F11 and F12 and put in different options. I like the ability to show desktop and dashboard but I don't like it being on the volume keys because with my other magic keyboard without numeric pad the volume keys do work and I don't want to get use to using the volume keys for showing my desktop and dashboard. I changed them to F18 and F19. Much easier and it also frees up the volume keys just incase apple gets their crap together, actually reads our concerns and fixes this issue. I also recommend playing around with all of the tabs and correcting your key shortcuts. There are a lot of things you can use your keys for which makes things easier to access. F13 through F19 are all free and have nothing assigned to them so you can assign whatever you want to these keys. I personally added some screenshot shortcuts, notification shortcuts, image import, internet and sticky note shortcuts with those keys. So although we are out of luck on the volume, this makes things a little better at least for me. Now for the volume. At this time there isn't a way to control it on our keyboard which is frustrating, however I can make it at least a little more convenient. Go to system preferences, sound, and check show volume in menu bar at the very bottom of the window. This will add the volume control at the top right corner of your desktop. This makes it a little more convenient to control the volume. Hope I helped a little.

I had this issue, and could not find the solution on this page. I went into System preferences, then keyboard and used both the boxes at the lower part of the popup i.e. "Change keyboard type" and "set up my keyboard" and it worked. I can now press the Function keys and increase/decrease volume without the dashboard appearing/disappearing! Wish I knew exactly what I did because the first time I "set up my keyboard" the keys were still acting strangely. Perhaps the trick was that I did both in sequence. Wish I could have been more exact and hope this helps.
