Try Safe Boot mode by holding down the Shift key at startup. Safe Boot is quite slow because the OS performs a bunch of cleanup and verification tasks, so give it time. After you're completely logged in, restart normally.

If you are unable to boot into Safe Mode as suggested by Rysz, try booting using the internet recovery mode by holding down the Option-Command-R keys at startup. Once the menu appears after several minutes select Disk Utility First Aid and confirm that your hard drive is working correctly. I experienced a similar issue a couple years ago that was caused by a hard drive issue that required replacement.

Hi

We are having the same problem. Apple then white screen. I have tried safe boot, the terminal and internet. The terminal says the volume is ok but it still won't boot-up past the apple. The internet won't come up. I get a world then the apple then white screen or black screen or a nicely colored blue screen with very thin black lines. Any other suggestions or is it time to put it down?
