HBOGO doesn't produce surround sound

Hello,

I have been trying to figure out why is that the HBOGO app is not producing any surround sound, just stereo. Other apps in my AppleTV do, for instance, Netflix or Movies.

I have already checked the settings on the AppleTV and it's with the "use the best available". I have already changed it to Dolby Digital 5.1 and it's the same, just stereo sound from HBOGO app. I have tried different materials (Game of Thrones, some other movies) and it's just stereo.

I've googled already and followed the few clues I saw (mostly was the Dolby Digital setting) but nothing changes, apparently. After changing this I restarted the AppleTV.

I have the AppleTV connected to my AV Receiver (Denon S720W) via HDMI.

So, for other users of HBOGO, do you get surround sound there?

Thanks!

OK, that's fair enough and why I was asking.

Try the following steps for the Apple TV 4, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.

  1. Check that there isn’t an update for the App, navigate to the App Store Purchased, scroll down and select the app and then navigate to and select the update option (if appropriate). You may wish to have your apps update automatically (Settings ➔ Apps ➔ Update Automatically ➔ On).
  2. Try restarting the Apple TV (Settings ➔ System ➔ Restart)
  3. Try restarting the network router.
  4. Press the menu button on the remote twice to activate the app launcher, scroll left/right to locate and select the app that you are having a problem with and swipe up to close (quit) it. Relaunch the app from the menu screen to check if it is now working.
  5. Try deleting it and reinstalling the problematic app. There are 2 methods of deleting an app.
  • Select the app on the main screen and press and hold the touchpad until the app icon wobbles. Press the play/pause button and choose delete from the menu that appears.
  • Navigate to Settings ➔ General ➔ Usage ➔ Manage Storage, scroll and select the trash can to the right of the problematic app and choose delete from the menu that appears.

I’m not really sure if there is any difference between the two methods but there have been some suggestions that the wobble method has resulted in some app data being left behind and ultimately causing an issue when the app is reinstalled.

To reinstall an app navigate to the App Store Purchased, scroll down and select the app and then navigate to and select the install option.

What do you mean? I assume the premium shows (like Game of Thrones) do have 5.1 at least. In a way, that's what I am asking for other HBO GO users: do you have 5.1 in some shows/movies? If so, which ones? So I can try here and see if I do get 5.1 on those or not.

I am sure there will be some material that it's just stereo, but the newest ones surely are 5.1 or more, no?

Hello,

I tried deleting the app (using the second method) but after reinstalling it I'm getting exactly the same. No Surround signal is being sent by the app to the receiver.

I sent a message to HBOGO via Facebook but they haven't responded anything.

So, my original question still stands: does anybody that use HBO GO on an AppleTV 4 has surround sound in the contents in the app?
