If you were told that AppleCare+ would provide for free screen replacements, then I'm afraid that you were misinformed.
In addition to extending the warranty period (covering any issues that may arise due to defects in materials or workmanship) and the telephone technical support period, AppleCare+ also provides cover for up to two instances of accidental damage.
For each case of accidental damage, a service fee applies. The service fee is either $29 for screen damage or $99 for any other damage (plus applicable tax).
Even if you are currently paying for AppleCare+ monthly, these service fees per accidental damage claim still apply in addition.

It is a valuable additional benefit. The cost of the screen would greatly exceed $29 were it to be repaired outside of an Applecare + agreement. And it would be done by Apple therefore not infringing your warranty.
